Close up flower shot

Like a star by lcw:)
Like a star, a photo by lcw:) on Flickr.

A close up flower shot. Flower courtesy of my mom, an avid gardener. Shot using the Sigma e mount 30mm f2.8. I rather like the details and colours from this lens compared to the kit lens (18-55mm).

Nice close up lens but without macro. I took this from about 6 inches. As the lens is without optical stabilisation, have to be more careful about camera shake and blur. I minimized this by keeping the speed faster than 1/100s

Sony e mount 55-210 mm lens

Got hold of the Sony emount 55-210 mm lense, and went bird hunting :)
The lense is not heavy, and the whole package (NEX-5) doesn't feel too big.
I managed to get the lense from US. With the flooding in Thailand, I doubt if the lense will be widely available.

A special place

This is a corner at the KFC restaurant at Artria Damansara. It brings fond memories. However they will be closing the complex for new construction. Artria used to be a in spot 20 years ago. Not many go there now. How time flies,

Fuel efficiency of Naza Kia Rondo - actual road use

We have been using a mid sized MPV distributed by Naza Kia for the past two months. The car got good reviews all over the world, and most said the fuel consumptipn is better than the previous Naza Kia Citra or Carens. However, i ccould not find actual figures that would have helped me make a better decision before buying an MPV. After breaking the car in according to the manual, the fuel consumptions figures are as follows: For mileage above 2000 km, city driving 14 to 15 litres per 100 km and highway 8 to 9 litres per 100 km.
I think i drove as conservatively as i could. I hope the figures above help you make your MPV choice a better one.

She is happy? I think so. I hope so. Photo taken at a nyonya restaurant before Chinese New Year.

Sensei is Japanese for teacher. My Ph.D supervisor Prof Emeritus Dr Yoshiaki Maita. My host for my trip to Sapporo and also my 'advisor/mentor/friend' Associate Prof Dr Isao Kudo.I think i learnt a lot from this trip. I just hope i will remember the things i learnt :)

I went to Hakodate last weekend. I did my Ph.D at the Faculty of Fisheries, Hakodate, and spent about three and a half years there. I had a fun time doing my Ph.D, so it was kind of sentimental to go back there. The town still looks beautiful. Attached are the night views of the town from Mount Hakodate. Reported to be the top three night views of the world.

Old Old Old Old Old Friends :D

During the Chinese New Year 2009 celebrations, we went back to Penang, and had a reunion of old La Sallians. We all entered the same primary one in 1977, 32 years ago. Isn't that just crazy :D Some i haven't met in over 20 years.
However it was really nice to see old classmates again. How everyone took different paths in life, and took the effort to meet up. I felt happy and good to see them again. Thanks to all La Sallians there.

Old friends, good food and sushi :)

In that order :)
Taichi and Gakushi, labmates when i was doing my Ph.D. It was really great to see them again.
My favourite food in Japan, delicious and affordable kaiten sushi. In the photo, sea urchin sushi. Sushi king / Sakae / Genki etc have a long way to go.

Spring in Sapporo

Didnt go anywhere but to the lab everyday. Anyway the cherry blossoms were in their full bloom early May.

Hishashiburi Sapporo

Basically means it has been a long time since i was last in Sapporo. Maybe 9 years have past.It was still snowing late April. Last heavy snowfall.

I have met a few familiar faces and a lot of new faces.

My daughter

My daughter is four years old this year, the apple of my eye. Being a father is not easy but has been such a joy. I also understand my own parents better.

Bowling personal best

I enjoy bowling. I used to go bowling quite often when i was studying in Japan. Now that i am working, it is more difficult to find the time for it. My average score is now 140 and highest score was 204 (photo L). Only once did i break 200. Here's hoping for more >200 scores :)

My parents and my sister

My parents and my sister are still living in good, old Penang. They came for a visit. After starting my degree at University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, i have not really stayed in Penang.
There were always reasons to be somewhere else; M.Sc at UM, work in Subang Jaya, Ph.D in Japan, lecturing in Kuala Terengganu and now KL. I find it harder to find opportunities to go back to Penang although Penang is always on my mind.
Probably by now, i have spent more time outside Penang than in Penang. Lost touch with Penang Hokkien also :P
You can take a Penangite out of Penang but you cannot take Penang out of a Penangite :)
